The Missouri Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association (MONENA) recently presented 10 y.o. Breanna Spence from Summersville, Mo.with the 2009 HERO award. Breanna was honored by the state’s 9-1-1 organization at the banquet and awards ceremony that is held annually by the association. The MONENA annual conference and trade show was held at the Tan-Tara Resort at Lake of the Ozarks. The award was presented by Michael Kindle, President of the association. Centurytel is the sponsor of the HERO award in Missouri.

In May 2008, Breanna woke up in the early morning hours to find her house filled with smoke.  The thick smoke, she traveled the distance of her house to wake her parents.  After making sure her mom and dad were awake, and that her little brother would be taken to safety, she traveled the  distance of her house through the smoke to awaken her little sister and help her leave the house.  On the way out, she grabbed a telephone, and placed the 9-1-1 that helped save her families house.  She stayed on the line with the dispatcher, relaying information from her dad, as he fought the fire until firefighters arrived on scene.

For knowing what to do during an emergency, helping remove her family from a burning house and placing the 9-1-1 call that helped save her families home, Breanna is truly a HERO!
